Dower House Ruins, Fawsley - Mounted Print

£6.99£19.99

SKU N/A Category

This is a high-end restored silver halide print from an original antique postcard, postmarked 1906. The Dower House, Fawsley At the foot of the hill, embowered amid stately elms, stand the picturesque ruins of an old manor house, known as the Dower House, or the Old Lodge, as it is sometimes called.

Last occupied as a dower house by Anne, Lady Knightley, who died at Fawsley Lodge in 1702 and was the last of the family to live there, since then nature and the weather have taken over and the house has been in ruins since the middle of the 18th century. Built around 1520 as a hunting lodge with watchtower, it is a small, H-plan house constructed from ashlar, brick and ironstone. Identified by Pevsner as the earliest brick-built structure in Northamptonshire. The house consists of two ranges, the earlier front range of brick with ironstone dressings and later back range, completing the H, of ironstone. The front range has a polygonal brick tower in the middle of the long side with a battlemented parapet. There is diaper patterning to the brickwork and beautiful twisted brick flues and arch-mullioned windows. The stone range behind has similar arch-mullion windows and chimney stack. Of course, no building of this age would be complete without its very own ghost – the sinister huntsman rides out on New Year’s Eve, dressed in green on a grey horse. Who the ghost is supposed to be is not known – nobody has waited long enough to ask, as to see the huntsman is a warning of one’s own imminent death, or that of someone close. Wherever possible tears, blemishes and scratches are removed and the colour and density improved and optimised for printing to ensure the print you receive is of the highest quality. All of our prints are printed on to Fuji Crystal Archive Paper, using wet process on our in-house Fuji Frontier. NB – This is a real photograph restored from a scan of an antique postcard.

Please note that you are purchasing a copy of the photograph not the copyright, which remains with the vendor. This image is sold for private use only and should not be scanned, uploaded to the internet or reproduced in any way without prior permission.
